SHANGHAI, Apr. 17 (SMM) - The government of Changji Prefecture, Xinjiang, decided to prohibit construction of aluminum capacity at three local companies, with combined annual capacity at 2 million tonnes, China Securities reported yesterday.

Market Frenzy Drives SHFE Aluminum to Over 4 Year High, SMM Reports
These include 800,000-tpy at Xinjiang East Hope Nonferrous Metals, 800,000-tpy at Xinjiang Qiya Aluminum, and 400,000-tpy at Xinjiang Jiarun Resources, the media said.

The 800,000-tpy at Xinjiang East Hope Nonferrous Metals has completed construction without approval. Construction of 800,000-tpy at Xinjiang Qiya Aluminum, which got no approval and has not been finished, has been halted. Xinjiang Jiarun Resources and Xinjiang Tianlong might face big difficulty in obtaining approval for its 450,000-tpy capacity and 100,000-tpy capacity, respectively.

China’s aluminum capacity under construction totaled 7.37 million tonnes in 2016, with new capacity concentrating in Xinjiang, Shandong and Inner Mongolia. The 7.37 million tonnes currently under construction might be the upper limit for China’s new aluminum capacity, with total aluminum capacity nationwide expected to reach 46.02 million tonnes in the future.
